SHORT BIOGRAPHY OF THE AUTHOR
Dr. Abba Isak Gebreyesus is one of the mostrespected scholar and academician in Eritrea with regard to history,culture, anthropology and sociology as well as literature andlinguistics, besides other role he made in different fields. He hasborn in 1932 in Halai, Zoba Debub. He born and raised among ninebrothers and sisters, and he is the sixth son in the family of Haleka(as well as Bashai) Gebreyesus Kflay and Tekea Semere. Among all, atpresent only three, including Dr. Abba Isak, are alive.
He remembers his childhood in relation to theItalian colonization, by saying: “Until my 10th birthday, I spent underthe Italian colonization. I never forget what I have seen in those 10years of my childhood. Among my remarkable memories of those years, Ican remember when we recieved Graziani in Adi Keih. At the welcomingceremony, I was wearing and decorated with attractive military medal inthe name of my heroic uncle who died in Mai Chew. I specially rememberclearly the years 1939-41 and how the last years of Italiancolonization were in relation to events in my environs. The impressionnever missed in my mind of those transition period.”
Although Abba Isak had a great interest to learn,as anybody else of his contemporaries, he couldnít get the chance offormal and modern education. However, he could master and recited everylyrics and teachings in his native parish. Besides the teachings in thechurch, he had to participate also in the life of the farming familystarting to shepherded lumps then to oxen and lastly to shepherd sheepand goats. After all this complicated shepherd life, he went to thelife of farming, as everybody who born and grown in a rural village ofthe time, but for only three years.
After all those years, Abba Isak started formal education in around
1952 in his 22. At the same year, he finished threegrades and pass to fourth grade. Then in 1954 he joined to theCapuchins -- Franciscan religious order. At this religious order, hisregular activity was to cook for the members. However, he spent histime with thorough reading and got much knowledge to his satisfaction.“When I feel I have got enough and understand better, I tried to sharemy understanding to others. For this purpose of discussion, I startedto write some notes for me,” he said.
